OET

Overview

The Occupational English Test (OET) is a language proficiency test specifically designed for healthcare professionals. It assesses the English language skills of candidates who plan to work in healthcare settings. OET consists of four modules, each targeting different language skills required in the healthcare industry:

OET Listening (45 minutes):

This module evaluates your ability to understand spoken English in healthcare contexts.
It includes two parts: Part A involves listening to recorded healthcare consultations, while Part B involves listening to a presentation or interview.

OET Reading (60 minutes):

This module assesses your reading skills in healthcare scenarios.
It consists of two parts: Part A includes multiple-choice questions based on healthcare texts, and Part B requires you to answer questions based on several short healthcare-related texts.

OET Writing (45 minutes):

The writing module assesses your ability to write professionally and accurately in a healthcare context.
It requires you to write a letter or a note based on a given case note, case history, or other relevant patient information.

OET Speaking (approximately 20 minutes):

The speaking module assesses your communication skills in a healthcare setting.

You will have a role-play conversation with a trained interlocutor, simulating a healthcare professional-patient or healthcare professional-colleague interaction.

As for OET courses, you can prepare for the test through various means:

  • Self-Study: Utilize official OET preparation materials, including sample tests, practice books, and online resources. These materials provide a good understanding of the test format and allow you to practice.
  • Online Courses: Many language schools and test prep organizations offer OET preparation courses online. These courses include instructional videos, practice tests, and personalized feedback.
  • In-Person Courses: If you prefer face-to-face instruction, consider enrolling in a local language school or test prep center that offers OET courses.
  • Tutoring: Some candidates opt for one-on-one tutoring to receive personalized instruction and feedback on their language skills.

When selecting an OET course, make sure it is accredited or recognized by OET and aligns with your specific needs and proficiency level. Additionally, practicing regularly and familiarizing yourself with healthcare-related terminology and scenarios will be essential for success in the OET.
